Traditionally, Construction was the main field of activity and the largest source of income for the Group. The Group's construction activity has been undertaken by AKTOR - 100% subsidiary company of the Group - and subsidiary companies of the latter in Greece and abroad. AKTOR occupies a leading position in the Greek Construction sector among the major Greek construction companies (7th (highest) grade).
Apart from its dominant market share, AKTOR stands out vis-a-vis its domestic competitors in terms of prosperity and financial robustness with significant cash flows generated by operational activities. To a great extent AKTOR took maximum advantage of the opportunities that resulted from the spectacular growth of construction operations in Greece during the past years, which were boosted by the major infrastructure projects of the 3rd EU Community Support Framework and the Olympic Games projects.
After the completion of these projects, the growth of the domestic Construction sector was held back by several factors, such as delays in the tenders of several public projects and changes in the way these were awarded. Despite the adverse conditions, the Group maintained its leading position and financial robustness and awaits a significant increase in Greek operations through the new co-financed projects that have been scheduled and other public projects.
At the same time, the Group's strategic planning in the construction sector which includes opening up to new foreign markets, is being materialized at a steady pace with an expansion of the Group's activities to Southeastern Europe and the Middle East. AKTOR has already undertaken the construction of significant infrastructure projects in these developing markets, in which the Group gradually consolidates its position as a significant business player. As a result, approximately 34% of the current backlog of projects of the Group's construction activities is traced abroad. The countries in which the Group has established presence and currently executes projects are Oman, Kuwait, Dubai and Qatar in the Middle East as well as Bulgaria and Romania in the Balkans.
AKTOR is successfully active in Infrastructure and Building projects of both the public and private sector. The procedures for merging ELLAKTOR Group of Companies with Pantechniki completed at the end of 2007. This way, AKTOR's construction activities as well as the Group's concessions activities have been boosted. The new merged scheme includes in its portfolio significant participations in concession projects, such as 59.3% in Attiki Odos, a strong participation in the Rio-Antirio Bridge as well as in new large-scale concession projects.
In the public sector, AKTOR participated in significant infrastructure development projects in Greece, among which are the construction of Attiki Odos and the Rio-Antirio Bridge; milestone projects in Greece's history of co-financed projects. Attiki Odos is one of the longest ring roads in Europe, with a total length of 65.2 kilometres. It was built by a joint venture of Greek companies led by AKTOR. The Rio-Antirio bridge is one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the world with a total length of 2,883 meters; it was an innovative project and a challenge for the technical world due to the rare combination of adverse conditions that make up the natural environment, such as the great depth of the foundations, low seabed tolerances, strong seismic activity and tectonic plate movement.
Moreover, AKTOR constructed more than 300 out of 670 kilometers of Egnatia Odos Motorway, that is the main road axis that connects Western to Eastern Greece and the Balkans. AKTOR's works performed in Egnatia Odos include a large number of tunnels, such as the Driskos and Dodoni tunnel, bridges and interchanges. Other major projects are the construction of sections of the PATHE motorway, including, among others, the particularly complex project of Kakia Skala. AKTOR participated in the tunnel boring of the ATHENS METRO extensions. AKTOR participated in the tunnel boring of the ATHENS METRO extensions from Ethniki Amina to Stavros stations and from Monastiraki to Egaleo stations, in the construction of the Agios Antonios station and is currently executing the extension of the line from Agios Dimitrios to Elliniko. Moreover, it is participating in railroad refurbishment and expansion projects for the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) network in Athens and the rest of Greece, such as the Acharnes Traffic Center (SKA) - Kiato section in Kakia Skala and the Tembi railroad bridge. Moreover AKTOR undertook the construction project "Lines Infrastructure Renovation and Backing of the Tunnel from Omonoia to Monastiraki of ISAP SA". Finally, AKTOR participated in the construction of several bridges such as the Evripos bridge in Halkida, whereas it has constructed a number of dams, such as the Smokovos and Thisavros dams at the Nestos river, the Papadias dam in Florina and port projects, such as the construction of the Atherinolakkos port in Crete and the Patras port.
AKTOR has constructed the majority of the projects for the Olympic Games. In particular, the Olympic Games projects that AKTOR completed were the Aesthetic Integration of the Olympic Sport Complex of Athens (OAKA), the construction of the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC), the Ministry of Labour facilities in the area of the Olympic Village, the Suburban Railroad from the Acharnes Transportation Centre to the Athens international airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos', the extension of Athens Metro lines from Ethniki Amina to Stavros (Doukissis Plakentias and Halandri stations), Access Improvements around ΟΑΚΑ, coverage of part of the River Kifissos for the construction of motorway, the extension of Kimis Avenue from the Highway to the Olympic Village and the upgrading of the traffic lights system in the greater Athens area. Moreover, in the past AKTOR had undertaken the construction of the Outdoor and Indoor Swimming Pool, the Indoor Sports Centre and the landscaping of the area around OAKA.
Among the special structures undertaken by AKTOR, within the framework of the OAKA aesthetic integration, complex structures of international interest are included such as the construction of Olympic stadium roof, according to the design of Architect-Civil Engineer Santiago Calatrava, the construction of a steel roof and the refurbishment of the velodrome facilities, the construction of the Agora as well as various projects related to the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games.
The range and size of the Group's construction capacity with respect to building projects, is displayed by the big number of office buildings, industrial units, commercial and convention centres, hotels, hospitals, sport facilities, underground parking stations and housing complexes built by AKTOR during the past years. In particular, among the major housing complexes that have been built are the 'Olympic Village' and the modern house settlement 'Lofos Edison Pallini' in Pallini, Attica, which was used during the Athens Olympic Games as the 'Press Village' for the accommodation of approximately 1,600 journalists. AKTOR has lengthy experience in creating modern hotel units with high architectural aesthetics whereas it has undertaken, among others, the construction of the Costa Navarino Resorts, the refurbishment of the Hilton Hotel in Athens and the construction of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Thessalonica. At the same time, AKTOR has constructed significant Office and Administration Building projects, such as the state-of-the-art buildings of Alpha Bank in Athinon Ave., the Bank of Greece and Intrasoft, as well as construction projects of industrial buildings and warehouses such as the new facilities of Halyvourgiki in Eleusina, the warehouses of TITAN at their plant in Thessalonica and the Warehouse of Fourlis Group in Viotia.
It is also worth mentioning that the accumulated experience of AKTOR in the construction of shopping centres, retail parks, supermarkets and stores is evident in recent construction projects such as the first IKEA store in Athens and the Carrefour shopping centre on Athinon Avenue, as well as the Yialou retail park in Athens . With regard to AKTOR's activity in the construction of Cultural Centres, it has constructed among others, the project of the construction of the new museum of Acropolis, the expansion project of the Athens Concert Hall and the full refurbishment of the historical building of Moni Lazariston in Thessalonica.
